Bernese Mountain Dogs are beautiful, large tri-color dogs (originally from Switzerland) are good-natured, gentle, and affectionate. They are strong-willed and intelligent. Some are good therapy dogs, and some can be more reserved or fearful of strangers. This all depends on breeding, how they are raised by the breeder and how they are trained after they go home. Proper socialization is critical at all stages. They enjoy participating in various activities such as carting, herding, agility, obedience, and tracking—anything with their human companion. These dogs are natural companions. They need to be with their family. They are not suited for kennels or pens. Yes, with two coats, they do shed. Training is essential, as with any family dog. There are a number of health issues and genetic diseases that affect BMDs and other purebreds. Sadly, their average lifespan is 7 to 8 years.
